Bullying Warning Signs | School Bullying

Whether it’s emotional, verbal or physical bullying, the results of school bullying can have a significant impact on a child’s life. Recognizing bullying warning signs and intervening can help keep kids safe.

School bullying warning signs may include, but are not limited to:

  • The child makes excuses for not wanting to go to school
  • A child does not want to take the bus to school
  • The child takes a different (illogical) path to school
  • Injuries are unexplainable
  • Grades go down
  • Items such as books, money and clothing are either lost, damaged or stolen
  • A child becomes withdrawn, depressed or moody
  • Loss of self-esteem
  • Loss of appetite, or the child complains of head/stomach aches
  • The child loses interest in school and social activities
  • The child has nightmares or trouble sleeping at night
  • A child expresses the desire to run away from home, or actually does
  • A child talks about harming themselves

Child and adolescent bullying is a serious problem. Children should be able to progress through their education in a safe environment. Importantly – If you think a child has been bullied or subjected to otherwise concerning behavior you should immediately contact the designated school employee or the school principle. Additionally, if you believe there is bullying behavior which is serious and physically threatening you should contact your local police department.
